Labtec expands its capabilities with a new Tox Lab

Innovation starts with the right environment. That is why Labtec, AdhexPharma's R&D competence center for transdermal and topical drug delivery, is investing in a new Tox Lab at its Langenfeld site. The new facility will go into operation later this year and marks an important step in expanding the company's development and analytical capabilities.

The dedicated laboratory has been designed to safely handle NCEs, hormones and highly potent active pharmaceutical ingredients (HPAPIs). It enables Labtec to support projects that were previously outside the scope of its existing laboratory infrastructure.

Meeting growing customer demand

The decision to establish the new Tox Lab was driven by the increasing demand for projects involving highly potent compounds. As customer interest in this specialized area continued to grow, Labtec recognized the opportunity to further expand its capabilities. An independent toxicological assessment confirmed that a purpose-built facility would provide the ideal environment to meet new requirements while maintaining the highest standards of safety, quality, and regulatory compliance.

"We quickly realized that we needed a dedicated laboratory to safely handle these compounds. That was the starting point for the project," says Marion Tegelkamp,  Head of CMC & corp. QC.

What began as the idea of a dedicated laboratory soon developed into a larger investment. As additional customer inquiries arrived, the concept was expanded to include a cleanroom area. This will also enable the production of clinical samples alongside formulation and analytical development activities.

Construction of the new laboratory began in March 2026 and is expected to be completed by the end of August. The facility is scheduled to become operational later this year.

Creating value for customers

The new Tox Lab will bring together experts from both Formulation Development and Analytical Development. Working closely together in one dedicated environment will help accelerate projects and create new opportunities for customers developing products that contain highly potent compounds.

The investment also reflects Labtec's commitment to supporting both long-standing customers and new partners with an even broader range of services.

"Our goal is to offer more development possibilities for both existing and new customers," Marion explains.

Built through collaboration

The project is also a great example of teamwork. From the initial idea and planning to the construction phase, colleagues from many different departments have contributed their expertise. Teams from Analytics, Formulation Development, Quality, Engineering, and many other functions worked closely together to turn the vision into reality. Their commitment, collaboration, and shared enthusiasm have been key to making the new Tox Lab possible.

Beyond the technical capabilities, the project has created excitement across the organization. From the first concept sketches to the final construction phase, colleagues from different departments have contributed to shaping the new facility.

"The atmosphere throughout the project has been incredibly positive. Everyone could see the opportunities this investment would create for our site and for our customers," says Marion.

When plans become reality

"I am looking forward to seeing the first customer project start in the new Tox Lab. That is when all the planning becomes reality."

The new Tox Lab represents more than a new laboratory space. It is an investment in future capabilities, greater flexibility, and stronger customer support. By expanding its expertise in handling highly potent compounds, Labtec is creating new opportunities for pharmaceutical development.
